Lawrenceville / Brunswick Municipal Airport
"Pappy Ellis Field"
Way back in 1936, in what was once a bean field, there landed an aero plane. Piloted by intrepid aviators, replete with goggles and silk scarf, they declared this land suitable for an aerodrome and the aires above it to be clean and beckoning to be tested. First known as Lawrenceville Army Training Aerodrome, many a brave pilot sought to test his skill and hone his lessons in mock battles in the skies above Brunswick County. Their little yellow bi-wing aircraft were a common site above and throughout the county. As evening fell, planes would return to the aerodrome and the pilots would be rewarded with home cooked meals and a family atmosphere provided by the proud citizens of the county. These brave men and their machines would become the vanguard of freedom in skies far beyond the confines of Brunswick and even America. It is to these brave, named and some unnamed fliers we owe our freedoms and honor their memories by trying to stay as close to the values planted in 1936.
